So, this weekend I am in Bar Harbor Maine. I will be partaking in the Mount Desert Island Marathon. I have never been much of a runner, (I’ve never really seen the point of running for hours) however, if you give me a basketball I can play for hours.
My mother originally signed up a three person relay team to run the event. Unfortunately, my mother contracted Lyme’s disease and was unable to train or run her portion of the marathon. I received a phone call at the end of August, she asked me if I would consider replacing her. I didn’t really commit until until the beginning of September. Since then I have been jogging/walking 7-9 miles about 2 to 3 times a week. It has been the most I have EVER run in my LIFE. I have to say that I have enjoyed the solitude of the treadmill in the late evening and early morning. So, when the run is over. I just my continue this trend I have started.

Treadmill
For years my wife has wanted a treadmill. So, for her birthday last month I bought her a treadmill. It’s not a real fancy one, but it gets the job done. The girls started out pretending to run on the treadmill. Now they are starting to actually use it properly. I have them walk for five minutes, and than they switch. In fact the first thing the three year old wanted to do this morning was walk on the treadmill. Here’s to hoping they continue to live an active lifestyle as they grow older.
My Relationship with BMI
This past Friday I had a Dr. appointment to establish a Primary Care Physician (PCP). The nurse had me step on the scale and I weighed in at 216.5 lbs, she also asked me for my height which was 73.5 inches. Now I have never really considered myself to be overweight, but according to my Body Mass Index (BMI) score of 28.2 I’m borderline Obese. Yes, I could lose a few pounds, but according to the BMI scales I would have to lose 30 pounds to considered healthy weight. To me that seems a bit extreme. I would be happy to get back down to 200 pounds. I never really worried about my weight in college and when I first started teaching. Because I would play basketball, flag football, volleyball, golf, tumble and base pyramids. My weight has been typically between 200 and 205, but now that my activity level has significantly decreased since I stopped teaching Physical Education, running Intramural programs, and coaching. It has led to my recent weight increase. I have tried gyms and other types of activities but dedicating time to it is very challenging for me. Since my doctor visit have decided its time to rededicate myself to increasing my activity levels and watching my calorie intake.

I realize I have lost some muscle tone and the flexibility I did have is disappearing. I would like to return to my former self. I want to stay dedicated this time. Only time will tell!!!
